Foundations / Explanation
Start with the reader’s task
Turn a feature description into documentation someone can act on.
What technical writing does
Technical writing helps a particular reader understand a system or complete a task. A useful document connects accurate information to a clear outcome. The work includes research, organizing information, drafting, testing, reviewing, and maintaining it.
Write a one-sentence brief
Name the reader, their existing knowledge, the task, and the result. For example: A new workspace administrator needs to invite a colleague and confirm that the invitation was sent. This brief is more useful than a vague assignment to document user management.
Collect evidence before drafting
Try the task in the supported product version. Record prerequisites, exact interface labels, expected results, and failure cases. Ask a subject-matter expert to resolve unknowns. Keep assumptions in your working notes until you can confirm them.
Practice
Choose a feature you know. Write its reader brief, then list the three questions a first-time user would ask. Draft an answer to each question. Ask another person to attempt the task using only your draft; revise the point where they hesitate.
